Pretty things

I've always loved badges and recently bought this cool swallow perspex badge from Irene market. I bought it for about R40 which is quite a lot for the size it is. Apparently it's a really simple process to do lazer cutting and there are facilities available for TUT students. I have so many ideas for badge designs and I think it would be easier than searching around and cheaper to just start making my own. Yet another point on my 2011 to do list!

I recently found this awesome site showcasing Naomi Murrell's stunning work! She is a freelance illustrator and designer in Adelaide, Australia. I love the whole look and feel of her site. She has some awesome jewelry pieces as well as art prints for sale. Once again price becomes a factor. Anyone know of South African jewelry designers or shops selling things with the same kind of style?

Another awesome discovery is foundandmade designs. All items are handcrafted using bits and pieces of vintage, recycled or repurposed materials found at estate sales, thrift stores or even a junk pile or two.

And now for my personal fave (because it's mine!): for Christmas my awesome boyfriend got me this beautiful camera pendant! It's my new favourite piece of jewelry of ALL TIME. His talented friend, Liz made it
from silver and  rainbow moonstone. I love all the detail she put into it. Really makes me wish I could go into designing jewelry.. Maybe I will one day.

Dylan

We had a family lunch with my cousin, Jeanne and her family just before Christmas.
She has a beautiful baby boy, Dylan who is just over a year old and such a delight to observe.

Narrative constructions

Last year as part of our video major we hosted an exhibition at the Open Window campus, consisting of 30 or so conceptual videos, each accompanied by an installation of sorts.

The title of the exhibition "Narrative Constructions" comes from the idea that each student had to go through a personal or creative journey of sorts and the process took place over a couple of months. The end result was something quite spectacular.

Each installation evoked some sort of emotion yet each viewer could still experience it differently because of their own "map of reality". I was blown away by the standard of my fellow peers work and that night inspired me in a big way.

This photo shows part of Arno du Toits installation. His face is pictured in between two of the viewers (Vaughan and Lizanne) while Bernard looks on from the outside.

An affinity for children

Just a quick picture I took at a wedding in December.
It seems I have an affinity for taking photos of children...hmm.
I know most of the photo is overexposed but I quite like the angelic look of him and there's a nice soft shadow on one side of his face.

New year, new hopes

So I admit I've been pretty terrible at this blogging thing. It's been 4 months with no activity at all. I've got a lot of catching up to do and hope to slowly but surely achieve my "resolution" to keep my blog updated.

There's wedding photos, a fashion shoot, Christmas pics and a bunch of randoms in between.
This year I hope to really get some more solid experience and build up my portfolio. I am looking forward to doing photography major this year. There have been promises of experimental photography, working with large format cameras and learning a bit about developing which im super amped about! (Hopefully Open Window sticks to these promises and doesn't disappoint!)

I'll also be posting some awesome stuff from a bunch of inspirational blogs that I have discovered over the last couple of months. Everything from photography and design to fashion designers and people who just like sharing pretty things and rad inspiration.

Peace out for now
You'll be seeing a lot more of me from now on.
